Move Over, Jeans—I'll Be Wearing These Stylish Skirt Outfits in 2024 Instead

From the outset, you might find deciphering how to wear a skirt during winter a little tricky. They don't have the same throw-on appeal as dresses, and they might not be as simple to slip on with any top as jeans are, but with a bit of know-how, there are ample ways to unlock their true potential in the colder months

The beauty of wearing skirts in winter is that there are hundreds of skirt variations to choose from—and just as many ways to style them. I wasn't the biggest mini wearer but I've been inspired since the micro mini revival (and the confidence that's been gradually improving in my thirties), I've been easing my way into shrunken hemlines and I find the best time to wear them is during the winter months, to balance elongated pieces. My love for midi and maxi skirts always rings true and I've been enjoying the tailored and knitted skirts on offering this year.

I could talk about the styling potential of skirts for an age, but instead, I'll show you some of my favourite winter skirt outfits to inspire your looks. Scroll on to see the four I've hand-picked and to shop any pieces you might need to re-create them should they not already be in your possession.

1. Red Knit + Tights+ Black Maxi Skirt

Style Notes: Chances are you’ve owned at least one black maxi skirt in your lifetime. If you still have one lurking in your wardrobe, you’ll be pleased to hear they’re set to be a big trend well into 2024 —a ripple effect of the miniskirts that dominated the runways. Pair yours with a statement knit and like Marilyn did, you’ve got a look that’ll see you through just about every winter outing.

Shop the Look:

Even lovers of monochrome looks are graduating to pops of red now. I'm tempted.

If you're looking for a staple maxi skirt, Raey is the brand to know.

Rip-proof tights? I'm listening intently.

Leather gloves will make all of your winter looks more suave, not to mention the warmth factor.

The contrast stitching will pop against the red knitwear.

I love extending the wear out of my strappy sandals with tights at the moment.

2. Grey Wool Mini Skirt + White T-Shirt + Shearling Gilet

Style Notes: When it comes to styling new outfits, one of the biggest hurdles can be getting your colours right. So, how about removing it from the situation? Monochromatic outfits dominated the runways this year and were anything but boring. Case in point: Francesa Saffari’s grey miniskirt and white top. Pop a coat over the top to trap the heat in.

This French brand is home to many unique pieces.

Every editor's favourite white t-shirt.

This bag will go down in the Highstreet accessories Hall of Fame.

Last year I purchased this skirt in black and I've squeezed so much wear out of it this winter.

3.Grey Tailored Skirt + Knitted Top + Black Blazer

Style Notes: Tailored skirts came back on the fashion scene in 2023 and it's a piece we'll continue to see throughout 2024. If you're wondering how to style them, do so in the same way you would tailored trousers.

Shop the Look:

A thrown-on outwear piece will complete this outfit and no one does thrown-on quite like The Frankie Shop.

Mashu's Nicole bag has great appeal for its vintage lilt and unique detailing.

Although Amy wears a streamlined tank, I recommend swapping it for a knitted top for the winter.

Minimalists, this sleek style is one you can quite easily integrate into your wardrobe.

Very few things are perfect but these mules are close.

5. Knitted Two Piece + Brown Suede Boots

Style Notes: You’ll be hard-pressed to find anything chicer than a knitted skirt and-jumper set. Be it high-end or high-street, they always look expensive—particularly when paired with suede boots, as Rachael Keegan proves.

Shop the Look:

A sumptuous cashmere knit with cable knit detailing.

Pair this with the matching jumper for a uniform look in a matter of moments.

Oversized brown suede bags are having a moment.

Gianvito Rossi boots are just as good as their heeled shoes and this hue matches the Anya Hindmarch bag perfectly.
