Here at Who What Wear UK, we obviously like to keep tabs on the biggest trends of the season. But we're also keen to analyse and pick apart the trend cycle to decipher which styles have the potential to really go the distance.

We like to report on which investment trends are worthy of adding to your forever wardrobe, the microtrends that give an easier (and more affordable) way to dip your toe into the new season; and the styles that are going to make it past the catwalks and actually into the wardrobes of fashion people and celebrities. Enter: teardrop earrings.

Statement metal earrings have long been an easy (and democratic) way of adding instant polish to an outfit. I'm sure we all have that favourite pair of earrings to throw on when we've missed the scheduled hair wash and need to look a little put-together for the office, a date or drinks with the girls. Just think of teardrop earrings as modern update to your favourite pair of classic hoops.

You might not be surprised to discover that Bottega Veneta was the originator of this latest earrings trend, sending chunky gold and silver teardrop-shaped studs down the runway of its A/W 22 show, in the ears of models wearing extremely low-key outfits.

This is the essence of why and how this particular design of earrings has since become one of the hottest pieces of jewellery to own—anyone can throw them on with a simple tank top and jeans, slip dress or button-down shirt and instantly look like they've just stepped off a Bottega runway (read: modern, timeless, cool and polished). Surely, it's a no-brainer.

More than a year on, the teardrop shape has found its way from the runway to the high street. And whilst celebrities from Kendall Jenner to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley obviously favour the originals, we're also big fans of the more affordable alternatives that can now be found at the likes of COSAnthropologie and even on Etsy.

Deputy editor Maxine proves that her Amazon teardrop earrings can instantly elevate a simple shirt.

It's a subtle update from a classic hoop to a teardrop shape, but one that I'm noticing fashion people adopting more and more. Not only have I and my fellow editors been won over (there's rarely a day in the office now that one of us isn't wearing a pair), but so many influencers and industry pals are jumping on this easy micro-trend, proving that it's clearly going to be around for many years to come.
