I'm a Fashion Editor—This Might Be the Best Dress I've Ever Bought

For the longest time, I felt I was on the outside looking in on the slip-dress trend. I'm busty and prefer to wear a bra at all times, but when you're a 32G, even strapless bras can peek out over the top of your dresses. So I resigned myself to the fact that, as much as I loved them, slip dresses were a trend I'd have to sit out on. Then along came Ghost's Palm Dress

Deputy editor Maxine Eggenberger wears the Ghost Palm Dress in ivory with a cream coat, tan handbag and suede knee-high boots.

Since breaking out on the fashion scene, Ghost has become one of my all-time favourite dress brands. I own its iconic Jenna Dress in three colourways (blue, black and pink, in case you're wondering), which I managed to snap up in various sales. I've also recently dabbled in the Luella, which is just as excellent. However, out of all Ghost dresses, the Palm has perhaps piqued my interest the most. As I've alluded, it's a slip dress, but one with a subtle V-point scoop neckline and straps thick enough to wear over even my comfiest bra. If I could have designed my perfect slip dress, it would look exactly like this.

After the Palm dress's consistent success and sell-outs, Ghost has just reissued the style in a slew of sleek new colourways, all perfect for the new season. When the dress first launched way back when, stock levels were quickly depleted on Ghost’s website. Having learned from my mistakes, I'm going to make sure I don't miss the opportunity this time around. I already own the ivory shade and it has proven itself to be just as handy and versatile as I thought it would, so I know any new Palm dress investments will be sound ones.

Although the cream shade blends seamlessly with my largely neutral wardrobe palette, I’m keen to wear more colour this year. So I am considering investing in the pretty petrol or rust iterations, though they're all so pretty, it's proving pretty difficult to choose! Not one to leave anything to chance, I decided to put the Ghost Palm Dress to the visual test by creating outfit builds around the different colours. Taking pieces similar to items I already own, I wanted to ensure I would get adequate wear out of whichever I opt for. In just a matter of minutes, I whipped up five stylish looks to see me through every occasion.

Turns out there is absolutely a place for these dresses in my wardrobe. So scroll on to see the ways I'd like to wear the new drop of Ghost Palm dresses (aka the most versatile dress of the year), from after-dark drinks to springtime strolls. Then, at the end, I've rounded up all of the shades once more for you to choose from. Happy browsing!

FIVE WAYS WITH GHOST'S PALM DRESS

1. DATE NIGHT

Style Notes: A leather jacket always has the power to give an outfit after-dark appeal. Be it for a (rare) date night with my husband or catching up with my friends over drinks, I know this will be an ensemble I can rely on throughout the year.

Shop the look:

In my opinion, this is the perfect leather jacket.

There’s no outfit gold hoops can’t improve.

Due to the heel height and the comfort, I can’t fault these mules.

2. SHOPPING TRIP

Style Notes: Considering that shopping goes hand in hand with what I do for a living, it makes sense that I've become quite the pro at it. Instead of wearing jeans for such an endeavour, I always opt for a dress, as it's easier to remove for stints in the changing room. Cue Ghost's Palm Dress. I’d also wear this for low-key brunches and general errand running on the weekend.

Shop the look:

No need to size up—this is already perfectly slouchy.

A Breton-stripe top with some weight to it is ideal for cooler days.

The scoop neck and wider straps cover all of my bra.

3. ELEVATED EVENT

Style Notes: I still have a wedding to attend this year, and with party season on the horizon, I figure this is a sleek look that can serve me for both.

Shop the look:

Wear this crystal necklace with everything from simple tees to, well, slip dresses.

I have an hourglass figure, and this dress hugs my shape perfectly.

How fabulous are these Cinderella shoes?

4. SPRING DAYS

Style Notes: Spring is my favourite time of year, and I relish the challenge of dressing for the weather. Chic and versatile layers are the key to creating stylish spring outfits when the chill comes into play, and I know this velvet Ghost dress is going to play an integral role in them. I particularly enjoy how it looks with a khaki jacket.

Shop the look:

This will work with everything from jeans and tailoring to slip skirts and dresses.

The Palm dress has just been unveiled in this velvet iteration, and I love it just as much as the OG satin.

Chunky rings give any outfit a “fashion” vibe.

5. ON THE CLOCK

Style Notes: While I generally like to keep my work and play wardrobes separate, there are some pieces that are too tempting to not wear in both. I'll be layering my Ghost dress with a breezy linen shirt for essential meetings. Layer this knit over the top for an extra layer.

Shop the look:

Personally, I prefer crew-necks to V-necks.

I own this shirt and get so much wear out of it.

A belt always makes me feel pulled together.

A gorgeous colour you can dress up or down.

Loafers are a foolproof shoe option when you want to look smart.
